To achieve sustainability goals, a comprehensive solid waste management project has been inaugurated at JNPT Township recently. This information was stated in a press release shared by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. It was inaugurated by Sanjay Sethi Chairman of JNPT.

In this project, solid waste management is designed according to the SWM Rules 2016 and the technology used in this project is BARC technology. The press release further mentioned that this is a bio-gas plant and generate power of around 5 MT. It also has hydraulic bailing press machine installed in it to compress dry waste.

NPT is the biggest container handling Port in India. It has been constantly focussed to reduce the impact of its operation on the environment. On the sustainability front, the port has undertaken several green initiatives such as harnessing solar power, sewage treatment plant for recycling of waste among others. The port has also switched to LED lights near the port area to reduce carbon footprint. The port not only aims to obtain economic efficiencies but also focuses on ecological and social stability.

Started by Government of India, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) initiative reflects the vision of the Government for ensuring hygiene, cleanliness, waste management across the nation. This programme also aims to work towards achieving the motive of clean India. It also focuses on developing modern and scientific methods for solid waste treatment.
