Plastic pollution is not an unknown problem. It is one of the most grave concern that our country and world is facing and it is slowly degrading the environment. Report suggests that India produces 26,000 tonnes of plastic waste every day. To fight back plastic and contribute to opting for sustainability Indian railways will now sell tea in “Kulhads” (earthen cups) instead of plastic at railway stations. Piyush Goyal Union Railway Minister announced in November.
As reported by various media portals, he also mentioned that this initiative would be the contribution of the Railways towards a plastic-free India. He was speaking during an event held at the Digawara railway station in Rajasthan’s Alwar district.
As quoted by PTI, the minister also added that “Kulhad” can help save the environment. It will also help in providing employment to lakhs of people from it. He also mentioned that at present, tea is served in ‘Kulhads’ at nearly 400 railway stations in the country. However, the railway ministry is now planning to serve tea in ‘Kulhads’ only at all the railway stations in the country
During the event he also mentioned about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his concern for the environment. As reported earlier Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) have been
directed for the production of Kulhads on a large scale. During the event, he also mentioned that electrification of railway lines across the country will help in environmental conservation as the engines will run on electricity saving fuel, energy, and money.
