The UNEP has started a project with the motivation to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 with the primary target that the emission should fall at least 6% by the year 2030. Carbon is a naturally occurring gas in the atmosphere, with a concentration of 0.04% by volume. This gas helps to maintain the warmth of the Earth, and it plays vital in the living of all organisms. Carbon is naturally emitted into the atmosphere by various activities which are totally categorised under the term Biogenic carbon [1]. For the past few decades, anthropogenic activities have led to CO2 emission in a very high concentration threatening life on Earth. Still, Carbon-di-oxide is most essential gas in Greenhouse gas

Greenhouse gas is the reason for the climatic change in the Earth, resulting from the accumulation of a high level of CO2 in the atmosphere. We also know it as shortwave infrared radiation. This radiation absorbs the heat and piles up it in the atmosphere, which starts the warming process, mainly called the greenhouse effect. Among all the sources of emission, the UNEP has recorded that 10 gigatons of CO2 are emitted by the “Building and Construction” sector. According to the Global status report for Building and Construction 2020, around 28% is emitted by building operation and 10% by the construction site, considered the primary emitting sector.

CO2 is emitted from construction and building site for various activities, primarily because of fossil fuel and higher activities where the electricity is still carbon-intensive. Thus the UNEP has started a project with the motivation to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 with the primary target that the emission should fall at least 6% by the year 2030. According to the executive director of UNEP Mr Inger Andersen,” the UNEP has stated that the rising and emission in Building and Construction sector emphasises the urgent need for a triple strategy to reduce energy demand, decarbonize the power sector and implement material strategies.

The report from the global alliance for Building and Construction mentioned that with the help of buildings’ climate tracker, the emission is lower because of the incremental energy efficiency investment and renewable resources usage. This has paved the way for the usage of renewable sources in the Building. We know this type of Building as the GREEN BUILDING. The usage of electricity is cut down; instead, the natural sources will fulfil the need.

Between the years 2016-2019, the emission rate reduced to half, which gives us the hope that we will achieve net-zero carbon emission in 2050. In 2020 around 20-30% of construction works were stopped entirely because of this novel pandemic, which boosted our goal. To achieve our goal, the thing we should do : Proper awareness, guidance, encouraging sustainable building and proper implementation We should all contribute with small but significant efforts in achieving net-zero carbon emission by 2050. It’s imperative for our survival on this planet.
